Disc Graphics, now known as DISC, has joined a group of businesses recognized as “GreenLeaders” by Newsday’s “GreenStreet LI” program. DISC’s emphasis on its own version of the 3 Rs of sustainable packaging – Rethink, Resize and Reconstruct – as well as its solid “green” business practices brought the company to the attention of Newsday’s “green roots” environmental initiative.

“We are honored to be acknowledged as a GreenLeader for our efforts to safeguard the environment and provide our clients with sustainable packaging choices,” says Margaret Krumholz, president of DISC. “This recognition is a reflection of our long commitment to environmental responsibility through our DISCover Green program, whose mission statement is ‘Moving Eco-Consciousness into Action’.”

Newsday, the 70-year-old newspaper which serves millions of readers in New York City and Long Island, established the GreenLeaders initiative as part of its “Greenstreet LI” program to recognize Long Island-based businesses working to reduce their environmental impact. To qualify as a GreenLeader, a company must meet one or all of three criteria: create or institute design efficiencies; offer employee programs and incentives around being green; or implement eco-friendly operating practices.

DISC meets all three criteria. “Our clients are very interested in doing everything they can to lessen their impact on the planet,” says John Rebecchi, senior vice president of marketing and business development. “It is our job to show them how to do it in a way that works for their business.”

An EPA Green Power Partner, DISC worked through the Long Island Power Alliance (LIPA) Commercial Efficiency Program to install energy-smart lighting and motion sensors at its Hauppauge headquarters. It also purchases carbon offsets from Renewable Choice Energy. In 2007, the company earned FSC Chain-of-Custody certification from the Forest Stewardship Council, an organization that promotes responsible management of the world’s forests.
